Second Stimulus vs. Austerity Measures

As we continue to spin our wheels in what, at best, could be described as a stagnant economy, the debate over the best economic course of action going forward is about to pick up additional steam.  We find ourselves at a critical time in terms of the health of the world economy and the decisions that will be made over the next few months will be dispositive on the question of how much longer the economic crisis will last and how much more painful it will be.

Putting Politics Ahead of People

Just in case there's anyone out there who needs additional evidence to back up the claims of Republican sabotage and obstructionism, here's a short list of some of my favorite GOP quotes from the last couple of years.  If it's not abundantly clear to everyone that the Republicans care much more about winning back their majorities than they do about addressing the serious problems plaguing the nation today, I implore you to take a few minutes out of your day to consider t

Closing Guantanamo No Longer a Priority

Let's be honest - it was never a priority - just an appealing platitude to the left during the campaign of 2008.  It's easy to make promises as a candidate trying to win an election, it's a lot harder to actually deliver on those promises when you're in charge.  Where did candidate Obama think these prisoners would go?  As a constitutional law professor, he cannot claim ignorance about the special problems presented by imprisoning non-state-affiliated enemy combatant

There's More to the Rolling Stone Story than Gossip and Name Calling

By now, everyone's heard the news about General McChrystal and his top aides' gossipy remarks about President Obama, Vice President Biden and several of the administrations other top dogs (except for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who, apparently, is well-liked and respected by those in the McChrystal camp).  While I agree that the remarks included in the piece are, to say the least, inappropriate, I think the larger story is being lost by the distractions of name ca

Help Me Help You!

It's been a crazy ride this last year and a half, fighting on behalf of current and former students buried under mounds of intractable student loan debt.  I've never been prouder of anything I've ever accomplished in my life and it has been my absolute pleasure working with so many wonderful people in trying to right this enormous injustice.

The Opposite of "Progressive" Is Not "Conservative"

Contrary to what Beck, Limbaugh, Palin, Hannity, Coulter and the rest of their ilk would have us believe, the opposite of "progressive" isn't "conservative" - it's regressive. You're either in favor of progressing as a civilization (becoming more civilized) or you're in favor of regressing as one (becoming less civilized).

Be a Hero. Save a Life.

One of my oldest and dearest friend's wife is currently battling leukemia.  They have a 2 year old son who needs both his parents in his life.  As such, they've started a bone marrow donor drive to not only help them win their battle, but to help others win theirs as well.

By taking just a few minutes of your time, you can literally help save a life.
