Co-Signer Relief

Losing a child is obviously one of the most difficult things a parent will ever have to face.  But what happens when that child leaves behind student loan debt for which the parents co-signed?

As if it's not bad enough losing a child, oftentimes, such parents are dealt a monthly reminder of their loss in the form of a student loan bill.  That has to change and, as the accompanying article discusses, we're beginning to see movement in the right direction, at least with respect to this one specific issue.  I'd like to see bills introduced and debated in all 50 state legislatures requiring the forgiveness of student loan debt upon a borrower's death so that his or her family members aren't left with tens of thousands of dollars in debt for an education that will never be used.  After reading this article, I implore you to write your local Assemblyman or State Senator and (politely) demand that the unconscionable practice of harassing the mourning parents of a college student who has died before his or her time.
