Conslidation

I recently graduated college and im coming up on the time I need to start paying off my student loans. do I have to pay them right away? can i wait until i am closer to the default period before my credit goes bad? and also I have multiple loans out, can I consolidate them if they are both private and federal? Please let me know what you think. I thank you in advace for your help
