New Call to Action - 9/15/09

President Obama will be appearing this Sunday on This Week with George Stephanopolous and Mr. Stephanopolous is asking the general public to submit questions that you'd like him to ask the President. This is an excellent opportunity to, once again, make our collective voices heard, this time directly by the President of the United States.

Please click on this link to submit your question:

This was my question. Feel free to copy and paste it and send it as your own, or come up with your own question, but either way, PLEASE take a moment to participate.

Thank you, as always, for all of your help and continued support!

My Question:

You've made strengthening the middle class one of the hallmarks of your campaign yet, with trillions of dollars in bailouts handed over to the very institutions responsible for the economic crisis, the middle class continues to be squeezed out of existence. Rather than rewarding bad behavior by throwing good money after bad, would you consider student loan forgiveness as a means of economic stimulus? For a fraction of the cost of what has been and will continue to be spent to get our economy back on the right track, millions of hard-working, middle class, educated Americans can begin revitalizing the economy NOW by spending hundreds or, in some cases, thousands of extra dollars per month, every month that would otherwise go towards paying off enormous amounts of student loan debt. Consumer spending, which accounts for nearly 70% of our economy, continues to lag, perpetuating this recession. Forgiving student loan debt could usher in a new era of freedom, prosperity, entrepreneurship and innovation from an entire generation of educated Americans who are currently shackled to their educational debts. Would you please ask Vice President Biden to make this issue a priority for his Middle Class Task Forcce? For more information, please visit http://www.forgivestudentloandebt.com. Thank you.

This is what I wrote:
I am a recent graduate of an Ivy League law school. I attended law school because I want to help people who are truly in need, regardless of their financial status. I chose to attend the school I chose because I wanted the best education possible. Now I am faced with the difficult choice of having to let go of my dream of helping others to make enough money to pay back my loans. Why isn't there student loan relief available to students who finance their education on their own, while there is relief available to parents who mortgage their homes to pay for their children's education?

This is what I wrote; I'd be happy to revise and resubmit if anyone has suggestions!

"I recently became a member of the group started by Robert Applebaum, "Forgive Student Loans to Stimulate the Economy". He is working diligently to both expose the predatory lending practices adopted by student loan lending organizations and raise awareness regarding the stimulating effect forgiving student loans would have on the economy now and in the future. I admire President Obama's concern for and dedication to the affordability of higher education for incoming students, but I know I speak for well over 200,000 peers when I inquire as to President Obama's intentions toward the graduates who are now consumed by debt. It is rather heartbreaking to read the stories of those who have gone so far as to seriously consider leaving their families for another country or are contemplating suicide because bankruptcy is no longer an option. I urge President Obama and Mr. Stephanopoulos to visit Mr. Applebaum's website (forgivestudentloandebt.com) to read further into the ever-growing plight of the educated poor. Thank you so much for your time and consideration."

Perhaps I should have narrowed it down to one sentence and a question mark lol.

If enough of us send a request, it just might get on as a question to President Obama. I'm posting now. Hope everyone will do this. This is a great opportunity!
